History: The concept for the coffee house was originated by teenagers during a visioning workshop in the summer of 1999. Local youth were concerned that Dolgeville lacks adequate social outlets for its young people, and the lack of such outlets has led to drug and alcohol abuse on back roads, curfew violations, and other forms of police involvement. A grassroots community based organization, East Canada Valley Vision started the coffee house project soon after the initial meeting. The coffee house is run by a teen executive committee and an adult board of advisors. The hours of operation and approach to serving the public are designed to support the Project Group’s vision of creating a community coffee house. The project group, formally named Riverside C.A.F.E., (Community Activities For Everyone) rented and furnished several spaces along Dolgeville’s Main Street. Activities were designed to support programs and to provide members of the community (especially teenagers) with a drug-, alcohol-, and smoke-free meeting place. Due to a shortage of funding and volunteers, the Riverside Community Café closed its doors temporarily in June of 2006 for an intensive fundraising effort. The Café reopened on Friday, June 8, 2007.
